LE FATE was one of the most successful examples of the popular 1960s omnibus film. Four lively episodes depict erotic encounters in different social classes, playing comically and intelligently with clichés and conventions. The first three were directed by Luciano Salce, Mario Monicelli and Mauro Bolognini and featured Monica Vitti, Claudia Cardinale and Raquel Welch. Pietrangeli's contribution, "Fata Marta," concludes the round and has a greater weight than the other three, with a 50-minute running time. Marta (Capucine), an attractive lady of the world and the wife of a rich doctor, seduces her butler Giovanni (Alberto Sordi) in a drunken stupor. The next day, to his great disappointment, she can't remember anything and treats him in a condescending manner.(hjf)
